Helpful Hints when Moving

  • Ensure that you tell the movers exactly what you want moved. It is your responsibility to check the house before the vehicle moves off.

  • Defrost and empty your fridge and freezer (if practical, otherwise have a box on hand so the contents of the fridge and freezer can be placed in it prior to loading the truck)

  • Have all appliances ready for removal

  • Remove all fixtures and fittings from your walls (Gilberts Cartage can help with this)

  • Dismantle kitset furniture (Gilberts Cartage can help with this)

  • Do not put breakables in drawers

  • Do not put liquids in drawers (sauce bottles, perfumes, etc)

  • Do not overload drawers − too much weight can damage furniture

  • Try to ensure that all boxes are flat across the top so they can be easily stacked

  • Clearly mark fragile boxes

  • Label the boxes so they can be placed in the correct room at your new home

  • Let neighbours and new owners/tenants know your new address

  • Arrange cleaners to clean house and carpets once moved

  • Change alarm codes in old house with new owners

  • Arrange for alarm to be installed in new house

  • Spare keys cut for new house

  • Transport your own valuables i.e. Jewellery, Photo Albums and so on

  • Organise accommodation whilst move is taking place, if required

  • Phonebook − pick up new ones from Postshop

  • Rubbish Bags at new house to collect rubbish from unpacking
